WP-EZ Website Builder 2.0: How to Transition from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4

This video & help page are for websites already setup with Google's Universal Analytics. If you want to setup your website with Google Analytics for the very first time, please see How to Integrate Google Analytics into Your Website

Google Analytics is a great tool that provides insight into how many people are visiting your website, where they're coming from and what they're doing.  Google introduced Google Analytics 4 (GA4) in 2020 and announced that they are discontinuing the old version, Universal Analytics (UA), July 1, 2023.

There is no way to transfer data from UA to GA4.  Therefore, if you want to be able to do year-over-year comparisons, you must setup and start collecting data in GA4 before July 1, 2022 and continue to collect data in UA at the same time.  This video and written instructions show you how to do that.

1) Get a copy of your Universal Analytics tracking code
  • Go to http://analytics.google.com/
  • Login to your Google account
  • Click the "Admin" option in the bottom left corner
  • You should see 3 columns: "Account" "Property" and "View"
  • If you already have GA setup for more than one website, you may need to go under the "Account" heading and select the website for which you are setting up GA4
  • In the middle "Property" column, click the "<> Training Info" option, and then "Tracking Code" option.
  • Copy the Universal Analytics tracking code into a text document. It should look something like this:

<!-- Global site tag (gtag.js) - Google Analytics -->
<script async src="https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=UA-114147623-1"></script>
<script>
  window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
  function gtag(){dataLayer.push(arguments);}
  gtag('js', new Date());

  gtag('config', 'UA-114147623-1');
</script>

2) Setup a Google Analytics 4 property:

  • You should see a notification at the very top of your web browser that says, "Universal Analytics will no longer process new data in standard properties beginning July 1, 2023. Prepare now by setting up and switching over to a Google Analytics 4 property."
  • Click the "Let's Go" button in the top right corner
  • On the page that follows, you should see a "I want to create a new Google Analytics 4 property" heading. Click the "Get Started" button below that.
  • On the popup that follows, click the "Create Property" button
  • Next, in the left menu, click the "Home" option
  • On the page that follows, it should say, "To start collecting data make sure your website is tagged using the Measurement ID: G-xxxxxxxxxx"
  • Copy your GA4 Measurement ID (which starts with G- and has 10 letters/numbers after the dash) to a safe place.
3) Configure your WP-EZ website with your Google Analytics ID
  • Login to MyOCC
  • Click to your WP-EZ Dashboard
  • Click the “More” menu and select “Google Analytics”
  • Click “Plugin Settings.” This will cause the form with the GA settings to appear.
  • In the "GA Tracking ID" box enter your "Measurement Id" (starts with G- )
  • For "Tracking Method" select "Global Site Tag"
  • Scroll down to "Custom Code," copy and paste your Universal Analytics tracking code into this box.
  • Skip down to "Admin Users" and check the box next to "Disable tracking of Admin-level users" (This will prevent your pageviews from being counted in the data)
  • Click "Save Changes"
Until July 1, 2023, continue to check Universal Analytics data.  To do this, when in GA, click Admin in the bottom left corner, and in the Properties column make sure your Universal Analytics (UA) property is selected, then go to "Home"

After July 1, 2023, you'll want to view GA4 data.  To do this,  when in GA, click Admin in the bottom left corner, and in the Properties column make sure your GA4 property is selected, then go to "Home"
